How to Calculate Square Footage

Rectangle/Square

Area = Length × Width
10 ft × 12 ft = 120 sq ft

Triangle

Area = (Base × Height) ÷ 2
(8 ft × 6 ft) ÷ 2 = 24 sq ft

Circle

Area = π × Radius²
π × (5 ft)² ≈ 78.54 sq ft

L-Shape

Area = (L₁ × W₁) + (L₂ × W₂)
(10×8) + (6×4) = 104 sq ft

Common Applications

  • Flooring: Calculate carpet, tile, or hardwood needed
  • Painting: Estimate wall area for paint coverage
  • Landscaping: Measure lawn area for sod or fertilizer
  • Real Estate: Compare property sizes accurately

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you calculate square footage for irregular shapes?

Break the shape into smaller regular shapes (rectangles, triangles), calculate each area separately, then sum them together. Our L-Shape calculator demonstrates this method.

What’s the difference between square feet and linear feet?

Square feet measure area (length × width), while linear feet measure straight-line distance. For example, a 10 ft × 10 ft room is 100 sq ft but has 40 linear feet of perimeter.
